Two Premieres: – First Print Edition for the Frieze Art Fair and Deutsche Bank Education Space

The very first print edition of has been published exclusively for this year’s Frieze Art Fair in London. Over the past four years, the online magazine has been reporting regularly on Deutsche Bank’s numerous art activities, publishing interviews, essays, features – and more than anything else the art of the largest corporate collection worldwide, which encompasses over 50,000 works of art. Again and again, of course, it’s been the artists themselves who’ve had their say, along with the collection’s directors, the curators of the exhibitions at the Deutsche Guggenheim, art critics, friends, and critics. Now, after nearly 40 issues online and in view of the great success of the annual Frieze Art Fair in London, which Deutsche Bank is sponsoring for the third time this year, the time finally seemed ripe to the editors in Frankfurt am Main and in Berlin: The Printed Issue #1 – compiles the best articles and most current themes of the Internet magazine – in the form of a newspaper you can pick up and read at leisure, with large images and a poster centerfold.

As in the current issue of db artmag in the Internet, one of the print edition’s main points of focus is the art metropolis London, with its current gallery shows and new acquisitions to the Deutsche Bank Collection there. But we’re also introducing some new discoveries, for instance Jennie C. Jones, whose Minimalist drawings in the exhibition were a favorite among visitors to the Lobby Gallery at Deutsche Bank New York this spring. Jones’ collage drawings combine the formal languages of Classic Modernism and Abstract Expressionism with elements of jazz culture.

Upon closer inspection, her lines, which grow out of squares and rectangles, turn out to be microscopic cables and microphones or miniature speakers that link together to form a sound system that is characteristic for the artist’s work. For The Printed Issue # 1, db artmag invited Jones to design the newspaper’s centerfold; to this purpose, she provided a work from her filigree collage series Listen-Record-Red from 2006.

The main goal of db artmag, as of the rest of Deutsche Bank’s art program, is to bring contemporary art closer to bank staff and the public – both in the Internet and, now, in print. The focus of our attention is to utilize art’s communicative and critical potential to foster an understanding for different cultures and ways of life. That’s why the Deutsche Bank Education Space will be set up for the first time at this year’s Frieze Art Fair, offering workshops to children and school classes in order to acquaint the youngest members of the public with art. Along with a wide array of courses designed to further children’s understanding of the making and interpretation of works of art, part of the extensive program consists of a huge world map on which children can add all countries represented by galleries at the fair. Additional items that make the Deutsche Bank Education Space a point of attraction for the fair’s youngest visitors are a quiz section, instructions for building a fair booth, and encounters with artists, critics, and Frieze directors that are geared especially for children. In his greeting speech at the Frieze Art Fair, Chairman of Deutsche Bank's Management Board Joseph Ackermann said: "We hope this will help encourage the natural curiosity in young minds and make the fair even more accessible to new audiences."
