Twenty schools from all over Germany were selected from a large number of applications to take part in the project Young People Interpret Art (Jugend interpretiert Kunst) in 2009/2010. Thanks to the committed support of the Deutsche Bank Foundation and the city of Duisburg, the competition offers talented students the chance to prove their creative potential at the Museum Küppersmühle (MKM). Guided by museum educators at the Duisburg exhibition hall, they have the opportunity to experience works of art in the original and to discuss and analyze them, after which they can translate their impressions into works of their own.
A prominent jury that includes the painter Markus Lüpertz and ad agency head Coordt von Mannstein will evaluate the entries. The winners of the competition are awarded the Deutsche Bank Foundation Youth Art Prize, which is divided into awards of 5,000 €, 2,000 €, and 1,000 €. An exhibition at the MKM presents the work of all participants. Winners will be announced on January 25, 2010, and the results of the Young People Interpret Art competition can be viewed through February 7.
The MKM is also one of the twenty art museums of the Ruhr metropolitan area that have joined together under the title RuhrKunstMuseen (RKM) in preparation for the Cultural Capital of Europe year in 2010. Deutsche Bank will support this association with an art and education project that is unique in Germany: the Collection Tours. The bank’s initiative will make it possible for more than 23,000 children, youths, and adults to visit the RuhrKunstMuseen next year.
