New York Times critic Roberta Smith characterized the works of Os Gêmeos as "graffiti art in its Rococo phase." The twins Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo recently realized a large "mural" at the intersection of Bowery and Houston Street in New York. It is a prominent location, at which Keith Haring had his colorful figures dance back in 1982. The Brazilians' at once brightly colored and surreal tableau cites such different influences as Hieronymus Bosch, M.C. Escher and the tags of the late Dash Snow, an enfant terrible of the New York art scene, to whom the work is dedicated.
Along with Banksy and Shepard Fairey, Os Gêmeos are among the Street Artists who have made it to established museums. Their huge yellow-skinned characters were not only on view in the streets of Berlin and the Dutch city of Heerlen, but also on the façade of the Tate Modern in London. Now the Museu de Art Brasileira (MAB), founded by the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, in São Paulo, the home city of the twins (who were born in 1974), is devoting a large-scale exhibition to the artists. The show, which is sponsored by Deutsche Bank, impressively illustrates that Street Art has much more to offer than just graffiti. In addition to richly hued wall paintings, canvases, sound installations and mobile sculptures are also on display. The duo named its exhibition "Vertigem", or "vertigo". It is an apt title, as Os Gêmeos have indeed transformed the MAB into a psychedelic wonderland that can make many a visitor reel.
