From Walt
Disney’s “Peter Pan” to Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” – in
Douglas Gordon’s exhibition The VANITY of Allegory, a comprehensive film
program constitutes part of the overall work of art.
The artist and the transitory: for his installation
The VANITY of Allegory at the
Deutsche Guggenheim, the Scottish artist
Douglas Gordon combines his own works and those by other artists ranging
from
Man Ray to
Jeff Koons with films from Hollywood and the underground. At the center of
the show, which was conceived especially for the Deutsche Guggenheim, is
the self-portrait. In his installation, Gordon investigates the
intersection between the vanitas image as a testimony to the transience of
all life and the self-portrait as an expression of vanity and a means of
self-immortalization. In the process, the artist uses art and film history
as source material. Douglas combines art works and films to form a visual
collage that tells of self-staging and double identity. Already in his
video installation Between Darkness and Light (1997), Gordon
projected the saint’s biography
The Song of Bernadette on one side and the satanic horror film
The Exorcist on the other side of the same screen. Good and evil
appear as two sides of the same coin.
It’s only fitting that Gordon
has set up a special cinema at the Deutsche Guggenheim to show his own
selection of films that further explore and illuminate the exhibition
theme of The VANITY of Allegory. The spectrum ranges from Hollywood
classics such as
Joseph L. Mankiewicz’
All About Eve to a documentary on the British performance artist
Leigh Bowery. Upon request, visitors to the exhibition can obtain a
personalized admission ticket that guarantees entrance to the exhibition
and the extensive film program throughout the course of the show.
Additional special events on the theme will accompany the exhibition,
which can be been through October 9 at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin.
